The 1-2-3s for Great Hair of Any Hair Type: Damaged Hair

Bleaching, coloring, perms, straightening, blow-drying, heat styling, sun, wind, sea water, pool water, and rough treatment can all result in damage to your hair. If your hair has been mistreated by any of these (or other) factors, you should give the following tips a try:

1. Let your hair air dry as often as you possibly can, to give it a break from
further stress caused by heat styling.
2. When you have to use a hair dryer, use a diffusing attachment to “soften the
flow” and keep the heat to a minimum. In addition, try to direct the airflow
from the hair dryer away from the scalp along the hair shaft to prevent
roughing up the cuticle layer of the hair.
3. Give yourself deep conditioning treatments to build elasticity in damaged
tresses and to restore moisture. You should select conditioners rich in
proteins and moisture building agents for the best results.

Quick Fixes for Common Hair Problems: Static and Fly-Aways

This is especially a problem in winter, when the air is heated and dry, and we stroll along on carpeted floors, generating our own electrical charges. This can result in statically charged, fly-away hair. Fortunately, the quick-fix for this is to simply spray your hairbrush with hairspray and run the brush through your hair, or lightly mist the hair with spray and use your fingers to brush the hair down. The polymers in the hairspray act as a coating to insulate the hair and remove the static charge.

Modern Myth: “Over-processing the Haircolor during a Make-over”

Most of us love a good make-over show. The everyday plain-Jane or overworked mommy gets swept away by a team of do-good professionals and is given a hip, new look. And in nearly every episode of many of these shows, the “victim” is taken from the salon with her hair in foils or a color cap to go shopping for her new outfit, but the host is concerned because they can’t be gone too long or the haircolor will “over-process”.

This makes for dramatic watching unless you know that haircolor mixtures that deposit color (even if they lighten the base color) only have an active lifespan of about 30 minutes before they stop working. They only work because of the chemical reaction between the ingredients. It’s like mixing baking soda and vinegar in a bowl. It’s going to react and bubble up, but eventually the chemical reaction will use up all the components that react to one another and will stop fizzing.

As the color mixture processes (the chemicals react to one another) the color of the product develops and the mix grows darker. The faster the stylist is at getting the color mixture applied once it’s mixed, the better the color results will be. So, you see, it’s actually MORE likely for a stylist to “under-process” the hair in a color service.

The only time you run the risk of really “over-processing” the color of the hair is in bleaching the hair to lighten it. And in a lightening process, you generally use heat to speed the lightening, and it has to be closely watched and monitored. You’d never let a client leave your salon with bleach on her hair. Most salons won’t even let a client go to the bathroom during a lightening process.

Wash Your Hair Carefully

It’s a lifelong commitment this chemical treatment. Be prepared girl! Arming yourself with the right shampoo and conditioner isn’t good enough. You need to wash your hair carefully too. First of all, never wash your for at least 24 hours after any chemical treatment. This is because during the treatment your hair shafts have been chemically adjusted. Your tresses need to get used to it and if you wash it before 24 hours, you’ll only be ruining the effectiveness of the chemical treatment.

How the weather affects your hair: Winter

The most common weather-related effects on the hair during winter come from the cold (or specifically the constant changes from cold to warm environments) and from static. Cold, dry air can cause the cuticle layer of the hair to lift, and going into a warm, dry interior environment then leeches the moisture out of the hair, leaving it dry and frizzy. This also provides the perfect conditions for static, which can make the hair very unruly.

Home Remedies for Hair Loss

Hair loss

Some loss of hair is normal. One of the more commonly-cited causes of the loss of hair is inadequate nutrition - mainly lack of protein, vitamin A and B in the individual’s diet. The hair grows normally after the liberal intake of these vitamins. These nutrient rich foods are eggs, nuts, soy bean, mango, liver, dark green leafy vegetables, carrots, dried apricots, whole grain cereals, peas etc. Hair loss may also be caused by a variety of other conditions such as pregnancy, anemia, thyroid disorders, stress, typhoid, influenza, and heredity. It makes the hair root weak and results in hair fall.

Unclean condition of the scalp can also cause loss of hair. It weakens the hair roots may result by blocking the pores with the collected dirt. Alfalfa juice in combination with spinach or coriander if taken daily will help the hair to grow fast. The juices of carrot, green coriander, lettuce, amaranth in different combinations is also considered beneficial. The combination of these juices is rich in elements, which are particularly useful for the growth of the hair.

Certain drugs including the contraceptive pills and chemotherapy can affect the growth and thickness of the hair. Vitamin B6 with magnesium will assist to some extent in counter acting the negative effects of these pills. Do consult with your doctor if you suddenly lose hair.

Home Remedies for Hair Loss:

Again, home remedies that claim to restore or prevent hair loss have no evidence to support their claims other than stories that say it worked for someone who knew someone. It is always advisable to discuss any significant hair loss with your doctor, especially if it is accompanied by signs of irritation of pain.

Applying almond oil on the scalp frequently and massaging the hair stops the hair loss.

A useful remedy for the patchy loss of hair is the paste of the liquorice made by grinding the pieces in milk with a pinch of saffron. This paste should be applied over the bald patches.

Amla oil prepared by boiling dry pieces of amla in coconut oil is considered a valuable hair tonic for enriching hair growth. Amla is called the Indian Gooseberry, and is available from many outlets by mail order. It is a key ingredient in many Indian hair products.

Mix the juice of one lime with 4-table spoon of thick coconut milk and rub into the scalp and wash well. This should be repeated once a week for effective treatment of hair loss.

Household Hints for A Beautiful You: Skin Care

• For rough dry skin (especially on hands, knees and elbows) combine equal
parts vegetable oil and granulated sugar and mix into a paste. Use the paste
on the rough areas and rub gently for about 5 minutes. Rinse the mixture away
and leave the areas if possible. If not possible to leave the residue on the skin,
wash the areas with soap and water and apply immediately moisturizer.
• If you have a problem with puffy, swollen eyes, try saving your used tea bags in
a re-sealable container in the refrigerator. Place a bag over each eye when
needed to reduce the swelling and puffiness.
• To help lighten dark circles under the eyes use raw potato slices. The
potassium in the potatoes helps to take away the discoloration, leaving you
looking fresh faced and rested.
• If you’re out of cold cream or need a quick make-up remover, use vegetable
shortening fresh from the can. It is an excellent emollient and smoothes and
moisturizes the skin while lifting away the make-up. After removing the make-
up, wash your face as normal to remove the residual shortening.
• If you are plagued by blemishes (pimples), you can reduce the redness of the
pimples by applying a dab of eye drops (the kind to remove redness and
soothe itchy eyes) to the pimple. The ingredients that soothe and clear away
the redness of the eyes helps to dilate the capillaries in the skin and lessen
the redness of the pimples in your skin.

The molecular structure of coconut oil is very small. That is why it can easily be absorbed without leaving an oily film on you. It is used as a remedy for dry skin and has even proven to be helpful with skin diseases like psoriasis.

For local people in Hawaii coconut oil is still the suntan lotion of choice. Now there are also coconut oil products available with a range of sun protection factors.

Hair and the Older Woman: Scalp Care

The fact that many women lose hair density as they age often leads to a problem that many women fail to anticipate until it's too late - sunburn on the scalp. Older women who notice that their hair has begun to thin should look for conditioners with sun-block in them, or else use a separate sun-block applied carefully to the scalp while the hair is wet, then dry the hair and style as desired.

Some women as they get older and enter into menopause or perhaps experience other hormonal issues find they develop adult acne and get blemishes on the scalp. Use of an astringent or anti-acne treatment that contains Salicylic Acid will help to clear up the existing blemishes and prevent others by helping to keep the pores of the scalp clean and clear of debris. In some cases, an acne cleanser can be used on the scalp before shampooing, but make sure to rinse thoroughly.

Note: It is important to know that acne treatment products using benzoil peroxide are not recommended for use on the scalp (especially if you have color-treated hair) as benzoil peroxide can lighten the hair.

Simple Rules for Growing Healthy, Strong Hair and Avoiding Breakage

One of the most common hair complaints among women is “Why won’t my hair grow faster?” Long flowing locks are on everyone’s wish list, but ironically many women have hair habits which encourage dryness, breakage and inhibit hair growth.

healthy hair growth I like to compare growing your hair to growing a garden, and just as a thriving garden begins with healthy soil, strong hair begins with a healthy scalp. A healthy scalp is a clean scalp, free of debris. “Raking” out the debris using a massage brush will gently lift away dead skin. With the scalp facials I offer in my salon I massage, clean and stimulate the scalp, which in turn stimulates hair growth from the root. Growth from the root is half of the battle. Watering your garden is also important, and when it comes to the scalp this means specially formulated hair strengthening products; a great one being a product called Hair Support. These products are gently enough to use everyday and are certainly recommended for everyday use for at least one month prior to any application of hair extensions. Hair Support vitamins can be used daily, along with your regular vitamin regimen. In addition to Hair Support brand supplements, you can also go to your local health food store and inquire about supplements that encourage strong hair and nails, as they are both built with protein compounds and are a package deal.

The third component to growing a healthy “garden” is plenty of sunlight. Just like sun is essential for maximizing the growth of healthy flowers, a similar method applies for growing, healthy beautiful hair. I recommend Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for my clients as a means of achieving this “sunlight” effect. Laser therapy is used in the market today by doctors all over the world to boost teeth whitening, to correct vision and to improve the look and texture of skin. Many types of Low Level Laser Therapies are considered to be extremely effective and, consequently, have become integrated into many mainstream medical and aesthetic procedures. When used twice weekly on the scalp, LLLT machines deliver just the right amount of power to begin to reverse hair loss and create a healthier scalp environment, while maximizing the hair’s growth and fullness potential.

Another component to healthy hair growth is pampering the hair with proper maintenance, conditioning and avoiding the ravages of heated styling tools. Too many styling products along with over chemical processing can strip the hair of vital nutrients, fostering split ends and causing the hair to break (otherwise known as the “chemical haircut”). It is important to make sure that all of the progress you have made in creating a scalp fertile for hair growth does not go to waste on broken hair. You will lose inches that way.
